An Orchard on the Banks of a River     Frits Thaulow

Many of the artists we know are reeling after the momentous events of November fifth. How do we stay inspired and energized when the world around us is changing so dramatically? Does making Art even matter in times like this? It may not be easy to find the good or the beautiful when we get distracted by big events over which we have no control, but we must. Art is Light, and as artists, we have an obligation to hold our torches high and keep them burning, no matter what. If we don’t, there may be only darkness. It can be helpful, if not absolutely essential, to tap into the thoughts of others for the support and encouragement we need to gain perspective and fuel the flames of creativity.

There is a wonderful source of inspiration for all artists in Rick Rubin's book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being. Rubin produces music for some of the most successful artists in the world and knows quite a lot about the creative process and the kinds of stumbling blocks that can get in the way. We often re-read a chapter of our well-worn copy at breakfast to get our day onto solid footing. This morning we read the chapter titled, "The Abundant Mindset". It begins:

“A river of material flows through us. When we share our works and ideas, they are replenished. If we block the flow by holding them all inside, the river cannot run and new ideas are slow to appear. In the abundant mindset, the river never runs dry. Ideas are always coming through. And an artist is free to release them with the faith that more will arrive.”

The universe is always providing source material for our art, but when we get stressed and anxious, we start to shut down the flow, and as he says, the river becomes a trickle. We must find creative ways to keep our flow going, whether through meditation practice, or a sympathetic group of friends, or perhaps long, contemplative visits to a museum we like. Consciously ignoring the news and social media for awhile can be a good strategy to aid in our efforts. Avoid social isolation and hobnob with your fellow wizards whenever possible.

We believe that we must take our artistic responsibilities more seriously now. The world is depending on us. Let your light shine!
