West Fraser’s paintings are richly painted scenes of the diverse landscapes of the southeastern United States. Born in Savannah, Georgia, Fraser studied commercial art at the University of Georgia and eventually settled in Charleston, South Carolina, after living for a time in Buck’s County, Pennsylvania and painting the New England coast. He recounts, “I started painting as a youth, usually knee-deep in local marshes, and am today living as I dreamed then.” Although Fraser has traveled throughout Europe, Central America and Scandinavia, he returns to paint the sublime light of the lowcountry.

Jean Stern, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum says, “. . . West Fraser paints with light - the radiance of early morning, the glare of high noon, the glow of day’s end and the mystery of moonlight - to create brilliant works of color and form. He takes what we see everyday, something that seems ordinary, and makes it worthy of fine art.”
